As the highlight of Pinellas County Park System Fort De Soto covers a 1,136 acres and consists of five interconnected islands known as keys. These keys act as sanctuaries, for beach plants, mangroves, wetlands, palm hammocks, hardwoods and countless native flora. Each element plays a role in preserving the parks environment.

Enough meticulous records kept by ornithologists have documented over 328 bird species within the park over six decades.. This list continues to grow with discoveries constantly being made. Additionally the beach is a ground for loggerhead sea turtles from April to September—an invaluable contribution to biodiversity conservation.

Fort De Soto has rightfully gained recognition. Accolades such, as being named “Americas Top Beach for 2009” by Tripadvisor—the worlds online travel community.
Furthermore the renowned “Dr. Beach” declared it as the beach, in the country in 2005 solidifying the parks status as a treasure.
