Location and Ambience
Situated in the burgeoning Roser Park area on 4th St, right next to the sophisticated Estate Cigars & Social, sits a vibrant newcomer to the dining scene – Nicko’s Pizza and Subs. The first impression the eatery gives off is one of inviting brightness, thanks to the generous, modern windows adorning the facade that bathe the interiors in warm, natural light.
Wine and Trivia, In That Order
My companion Bolt and I decided to visit on Trivia Night, a lively affair hosted by Geeks Who Drink that transpires every Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm. These nights come with the additional treat of half-off on bottles of wine – an offer we were more than eager to partake in. A bottle of delightful Pinot Grigio was our order, which we shared while immersing ourselves in the game.
Culinary Highlights: Pizza at Its Best
Turning our attention to the food, we embarked on our culinary adventure with a classic pepperoni pizza. Each bite was a joy, carrying a harmonious blend of flavors that embodied the essence of comfort food.
The Pizza Shop Salad, tailored to my preference with olive oil and vinegar and without onions, and the Classic Turkey Club Sub, amplified the gastronomic experience, the sub, in particular, being a standout. Nicko’s has an interesting tradition of unveiling a new specialty pizza every month. This month’s star is the Mediterranean, a vegetable-centric creation I’m itching to sample during my next visit.
Service: Above and Beyond
Our server Dimarian demonstrated exceptional service – swift delivery, attentive, and amiable. His capacity to remember regular patrons’ orders (in this case, my dad’s) truly underscored the personal touch Nicko’s brings to the table.
Pet-Friendly and Fun: Dog Lovers, Take Note!
While there’s no outdoor seating, well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcomed inside the restaurant, a policy Bolt appreciated as he was promptly given a cold bowl of water. Although we didn’t snag the top spot in the trivia game, the fun atmosphere and promise of gift cards for the top two or three winners have inspired us to return for a rematch.
A New Go-To Spot
Our first visit to Nicko’s Pizza was marked by delicious food, excellent service, and an engaging trivia night that had Bolt and I leaving quite happy. The establishment’s lively atmosphere, coupled with its dog-friendly policy, sets it apart as a go to pizza and sub joint in the bustling Tampa Bay dining scene. A rematch at the trivia game and a taste of the monthly special Mediterranean pizza or the small bites meatballs await us on our return visit. I can confidently recommend Nicko’s to anyone seeking a fun, relaxed dining experience and delicious subs and pizza in the heart of St. Petersburg.
